PhD programs

Supélec is an important training center for Ph.D students in the field of information, energy and systems sciences, and it welcomes more than 250 Ph.D students into its research programs and laboratory facilities. At the beginning, on account of its private status, Supélec was not allowed to hold Ph.D programs. In 2006, however, a State order defining Doctoral Studies removed this impediment and paved the way for authorizing its Ph.D program. Supélec then chose to continue relations with other Ph.D partner schools, within the framework of a co-accreditation system permitting enrollment of its Ph.D students. Today, there are three Ph.D partner schools (Ecoles Doctorales – EDs), namely STITS – Sciences et Technologies de l’Information des Télécommunications et des Systèmes at Gif-sur-Yvette ;  MATISSE – Mathématiques, Informatique, Signal, Electronique et Télécommunications at Rennes ; and EMMA- Energie, Mécanique et Matériaux at Metz. As a result, Supélec wishes to apply the best quality standards to its own programs (i.e. optimal faculty/student ratio, scientific publications, etc.) while offering a unique style (thanks to strong industrial relations, highly qualifying and professional environment with transversal training, etc.).

In early 2009, 269 Ph.D students were actively involved in research labs at Supélec. Out of these, 59 students were directly enrolled in Supélec’s program (initial enrollments into first-year thesis studies started in 2007 at STITS and in 2008 at MATISSE and EMMA). In the end, virtually all Ph.D students taking part in its programs will be enrolled at Supélec (possibly in cooperation with other institution advisor).
The two graphs below illustrate the current status of Ph.D students at Supélec: engineers hold the biggest share and the number of relations with industry is quite impressive.
